Original 19th Century British Flintlock Horse Pistol Retailed by Woolley, Sargant & Fairfax - Circa 1830

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a lovely brass-mounted long Flintlock Horse pistol, featuring a very nice "long-eared" butt cap and a captured ramrod, so it would not easily be lost while on horseback. It has a lovely patina of age, and the lock plate tail is marked WARRANTED, indicating that it is most likely a trade lock, made for retailers and suppliers. These were left blank, so that the retailer / outfitter could mark them with their own name, and in this case it reads as follows:-

Later known as Woolley & Co, this was a military outfitter / maker located in Birmingham, England, previously known as Woolley & Sargant. Fairfax joined the partnership, and it was known as Woolley, Sargant, & Fairfax for the period 1826-1834, which places this pistol relatively firmly in history.

The pistol fitted with a 14 ½ inch long part octagonal barrel with a bore of about .50", and measures a substantial 21 inches in length, definitely a bit longer than we typically see for "horse pistols". Also unlike many that we see, it is still in the original flintlock configuration, with modern appointments like two screws behind the cock and a frizzen reinforcement bridle. The breech of the barrel bears the CROWN / CROSSED SCEPTERS / BPC "proof" and CROWN / CROSSED SCEPTERS / V "viewed" marks from the English city of Birmingham on the top near the breech, used from 1813 to 1855 for black powder arms.

Overall the pistol is in very nice sound condition, with a lovely patina on the brass from age. The iron and metal components show some past oxidation, particularly the barrel, which shows past peppering on the exterior. The stock is in very good shape, with a lovely color, and does no show any cracks or major damage, just the usual wear from use. The lock is fully functional, holding at half cock and firing full, with the only real issue being that the hammer screw is missing half of the head.
