Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very interesting Unidentified Pneumatic or Air rifle, which we believe to be of European origin, but it could very well be from the Americas or elsewhere. It does not have any identifying markings on it we can see, and the swivel breech reloading system is also something we were unable to find any information on. Almost all pneumatic guns we could fine from the 19th century would just load through a door on top of the action, however this one has a lever on the bottom the move the barrel forward so it can swing out to the side from reloading.
While we call this a rifle, as with most "air rifles" it is in fact smoothbore, and the barrel is also made of brass, which is completely shiny on the interior. It's very possible this was not for pellets, but for something else like small darts or arrows. The action is made from iron or steel, and has a hammer and "frizzen", which would release the gas pressure to propel the projectile forward. We do not have any way to pressurize the system, and the butt stock reservoir does not have a closure plug anymore anyway, so we have no way to check for functionality at all. This looks to possibly have been entirely hand made from parts on hand, and definitely required a high level of skill.
A very interesting 19th century Pneumatic rifle, ready to research and display!
