Original Item. Only One Available. This is an extraordinary example of an American Revolutionary War mounted dragoon saber, which is likely American-made but may also be of German origin or influence. It has a lovely brass stirrup-style hilt with a wire-wrapped leather grip.
The curved 30¼” blade features a thin fuller at the end. This example certainly saw heavy use and has a lovely patina across the blade, with past oxidation having been cleaned away, with some moderate pitting overall. There are very few chips and the chips that are there are not very noticeable. The hilt is in great condition with a gorgeous patina overall. The hilt is a very unique twist to the stirrup style, with ovular holes to each side of the ricasso. The sword measures 36” overall, and has certainly stood the test of time.
The leather grip is held on by eleven sets of two pieces of twisted brass wire, and this is certainly the original grip of the saber. This style is very similar to other American-made dragoon sabers of the period, with a bit of German influence in the design as well.
By 1778, there was an explosion of newly formed cavalry units fighting on both sides of the Revolutionary War. While the British and Loyalist light dragoons were largely armed with swords made by James Potter of New York City (see 2004-15), the Continental Army was left scrambling to equip their mounted troops with these necessary weapons. While it is known that Patriot units like "Light-Horse Harry" Lee's Legion and Francis Marion's Brigade preferred captured Potter swords, there weren't enough taken to entirely outfit the Continental Light Dragoons.
This is a phenomenal example of an American Revolutionary War Dragoon saber. It will become a centerpiece of any Revolutionary War collection.
