Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a phenomenal example of an American Revolutionary War Era Naval “Figure-of-Eight” Cutlass in original untouched condition. The cutlass is designed in the classic Figure-of-Eight fashion, with the entire cutlass having a similar peppery oxidation. The cutlass has suffered the salt air of the oceans and is typically rusted (stabilized) and pitted. This example has a lovely brass diamond attached to the bowl guard, stamped XXIV, the Roman Numeral for 24, which we believe to denote a rack number.
The 20⅞” blade is straight without any serious deviation. It is of the standard cutlass design for the period, and is 1⅝” wide at the ricasso. The hilt is designed in the style of late 18th century cutlasses with an iron grip. This was not replaced with a ribbed grip until the 1804 model. The overall length of the cutlass is roughly 25½”.
The brass triangle stamped XXIV adds some tremendous character to the cutlass, and it’s clear this example saw extensive use during the period.
This is a tremendous example which will fit perfectly into any Early Naval Warfare collection. We will likely never see another example like it with the rack number diamond. Comes ready for further research and display.
