The Story

Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a very interesting and scarce “dog tag” set, a lovely gilt Austro-Hungarian officer’s identification card capsule, which contains a paper record of the officer, his date of birth, rank, and unit information. This example retains much of its original gilt finish and is actually stamped on the interior with the officer’s information as well as written on the paper.

The capsule retains the original paper record for the officer, which lists his Truppen or troop (unit) as I.R. 61, indicating service with the 61st Austrian Regiment of Infantry. His name is Franz Toifl, and his rank is Lieutenant. He was born in 1889 and first enlisted in the military in 1911, at the age of 22. He appears to be from Wien, otherwise known as Vienna, Austria. This is the first example we’ve seen with the the information stamped on the interior of the capsule!

A great example worthy of further research! This is only the third Austro-Hungarian dog tag set we have offered, so don’t miss out!
