Original Belgian WWI M1916 Bayonet for M1889 Mauser Rifle with Scabbard

Original Item: Only One Available. This is an original Belgian M1916 Bayonet for the M1889 Mauser rifle, the primary service weapon used by Belgian forces during WWI. It comes complete with its original steel scabbard and is overall in very good condition.

M1916 bayonets were produced from 1916–1918 at Manufacture D'Armes de le Etat (Arms Manufacturer of the State): abbreviated MAE. During WWI, Liège had been overrun in 1914, so MAE operated temporary factories in Calais, France; and Birmingham, England.

The design is relatively simple, and features a spear point "flattened cruciform" blade, with a relatively standard hilt with locking mechanism. The blade lengths varied, and this example has a 17 1/2 inch blade, which looks to be the original length. The blade is in very good condition, with a lot of the original factory blued finish, and has not been sharpened. The hilt shows a bit more wear and oxidation, as it was not protected by the scabbard. The grip scales are in nice shape, as shown.

The scabbard has some of the original bluing present, but also has several very significant dents, though they do not interfere with sheathing the blade.

Still has some of the original arsenal grease on the blade, but would clean up nicely. The only “real” issue is that there is a bend in the scabbard, almost as if it were used as a pry tool of sorts. It could be reshaped, however we left it as is.
