The Story

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a lovely British Flintlock "Walking" Pistol, clearly marked on the lock with HAMPTON & SON, a known London firm that looks to have made flintlock pistols during the early 19th Century. We have unfortunately not been able to find much in the way of details about the firm, but that is often the case for this period. It looks to be all original, except for the period applied 3 inch long belt look on the left side.

The pistol measures 12 1/2 inches in overall length, and is fitted with a lovely 7 1/4 long heavy octagonal barrel with a large "Man-Stopping" bore of 0.64", which was considered "18 bore" in side. This would definitely stop anyone in their tracks at close range. The top left facet of the barrel is marked with CROWN / CROSSED SCEPTERS / BPC proof and CROWN / CROSSED SCEPTERS / V viewed marks from the English city of Birmingham, correct markings for pre-1853 manufacture.

The lock is a modern one, with a frizzen reinforcement bridle, and a roller on the end of the frizzen spring. It also features a tight-sealing flash pan, with "gutters" on either side, which would help to keep water away during inclement weather. We checked the lock action, and it is fully functional, holding at half cock and firing at full, with a strong mainspring.

The pistol is full-stocked, with lovely engraved brass fittings and a "pineapple" style finial on the front of the trigger guard. There is no butt plate, giving the grip a lovely streamlined look which is also very comfortable. Under the barrel is a lovely original horn fitted ramrod.

Overall condition is very good, showing a lovely lightly stained patina on the metalwork and no major oxidation we can see. The stock has a lovely color, showing just a small crack running forward from the lock screw, a very common place for this to occur. There is also a crack under the ramrod in the channel.

A lovely "Man-Stopping" Flintlock Walking pistol in very good shape, ready to research and display!
