The Story

Original Item: Only One Available. Here we have a lovely P-1796 Light Dragoon flintlock pistol, the standard pistol in use during most of the Napoleonic wars. It dates prior to the Battle of Waterloo, so it's very possible that was used during the conflict, of which there were many campaigns and battles. This does not have any regimental markings on it, but there is a No 17 marking on the right side of the butt cap. It also could be an Officer's privately purchased example. It has a great patinated look, and the stock has a good amount of curl figuring to the grain around the wrist. Really a lovely example with some interesting characteristics!

The Lock Plate is marked Crown / G.R. with DUBLIN / CASTLE across the lock's tail in a shield. This makes this pistol an example of the very rare Dragoon Pistols made in DUBLIN CASTLE in Ireland, as opposed to the TOWER ARMORIES in London. It looks to have been made right at the transition to the "New Land Pattern" introduced in 1808, as it features the "Ring Neck" hammer, which were found much less likely to break than the traditional "swan neck" type. The lock itself functions correctly, holding at half cock and firing at full.

The pistol is a standard full stocked flintlock pistol and has all brass mounts, measuring just over 15 inches in overall length. In fine tight and all original condition showing no restoration in fine patinated condition. It features a 9 inch long .67" smooth bore barrel which still bears two relatively clear CROWN / CROSSED SCEPTERS markings, for Pre-1813 inspection at the Ordnance Proof house on Tower Wharf close to the Tower of London. This is the marking for "Private" arms, just as one would expect to see on a privately purchased example.

The stock is in good shape, with a lovely color, showing some excellent "flame figuring" throughout the wood near the grip, wrist, and barrel tang, while it is less evident farther down towards the muzzle. The pistol shows long use, and definitely has its share of dents, dings, and small chips. We can also see some filler repairs on the bottom under the fore stock, and there is also a sizeable chunk missing on the left side, running back 4 inches from the muzzle. There is a lovely brass fit wooden ramrod under the barrel.

A highly desirable IRISH Flintlock from the Napoleonic Wars that may have seen action at the Battle of Waterloo. Ready to display!
