The Story

Original Item: Only One Available. Here we have a lovely P-1796 Light Dragoon flintlock pistol, the standard pistol in use during most of the Napoleonic wars. It dates prior to the Battle of Waterloo, so it's very possible that was used during the conflict, of which there were many campaigns and battles. This does not have any regimental markings on it, and looks to probably be an Officer's privately purchased example. It has a great patinated look, and the stock has a good amount of curl figuring to the grain around the wrist. Really a lovely example!

The pistol is a standard full stocked flintlock pistol which conforms well to the P-1796 standard, used by British Dragoons across the empire. It features a 9 inch long .69" caliber barrel and overall length of 15 1/2 inches. The Lock Plate is marked (CROWN) / G.R. under the pan, with KETLAND & Co. across the tail, for the famous Birmingham-based gunmaker after 1806, when "& Co." was added to the name. These markings indicates that the pistol was purchased directly by an officer of the regiment, as they were required to purchase their own arms. The barrel is marked with two CROWN / CROSSED SCEPTERS markings, for Pre-1813 inspection at the Ordnance Proof house on Tower Wharf close to the Tower of London. This is the marking for "Private" arms, just as one would expect to see on a privately purchased example.

The stock is in very good condition, with a lovely color and shows the typical wear from service and display. There is some loss of wood around the cross pins due to oxidation, as well as a crack running from the breech to the side plate, a very common place for these to occur. We do not see any repairs or major damage. The lock is in good shape and functional, holding properly at half cock, and firing at full. There is a lovely brass tipped wooden ramrod under the barrel, which looks to be original, and even has a clearing worm on the narrow end. The channel is marked with assembly number XII.

A highly desirable private purchase Flintlock Light Dragoon Pistol from the Napoleonic Wars, ready to display!
