The Story

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a fantastic find! This is a lovely example of a British Flintlock Paget Carbine, complete with an intact saddle ring bar, rings, and the "captured" ramrod. This model was also more officially known as the Model 1805 Short Light Cavalry Carbine, and was the shortest shoulder arm in the British supply chain, at only 31 inches in overall length with a 16 inch barrel. As with other carbines, it is in .65" caliber, and this is the first example that we have ever had of one of these hard to find carbines.

Our example is just great, it is all brass mounted, with a very nice walnut stock which has passed the ages with flying colors. There is a single ramrod pipe with a throat pipe, holding the original captured ramrod.

The small lock plate is correctly marked CROWN / GR under the hammer and TOWER on the lock plate tail near the small "teat". It also has a CROWNED BROAD ARROW ordnance "lock viewer's" marking under the flash pan, which is the correct type with a rear shield. The lock features the correct sliding safety of this pattern, and the lock is fully functional, holding correct at half stock and firing only at full.

The 16" barrel is in lovely condition, showing a nice bright patina, showing only light wear. There does not appear to be much powder burn near the touch hole, so we do not believe that the carbine was fired much. The top of the barrel shows a CROWN / GR marking over a CROWN / CROSSED SCEPTERS marking, indicating Pre-1813 military inspection at the Ordnance Proof house on Tower Wharf close to the Tower of London. There is another proof mark on the right side under the frizzen, but we cannot make out what it says.

Condition of the carbine is very good, showing the expected wear from long age and service. The metalwork shows some light wear, but overall the markings are still quite crisp, indicating that it has not been overly cleaned or restored over the years. The swivel ramrod works correctly as well, though sometimes it gets stuck on the "spoon" inside the stock. Rotating the rod a bit seems to help it get free.

The stock is in lovely condition, with the main issue being a crack under the lock running to the trigger guard inlet. There does not appear to be any other issues, and the right side of the stock is marked with another CROWN / CROSSED SCEPTERS proof. There are additional proofs just to the rear of the trigger guard.

These carbines are exceptionally rare, and this will make a fantastic addition to any British arms collection. Ready to research and display!
