The Story

Original Item: Only One Available. This bayonet was designed for the Lee-Enfield No.5 MkI Jungle Carbine, which had a large flash hider that prevented earlier bayonets from fitting. The bayonet was also used with the 9 mm Sterling L2 submachine gun. This is totally original British Military production and is marked (P) 1946, for manufacture by the Royal Ordnance Factory at Poole, who only made them during the post war period.

This is the second model of the No.5 Bayonet with two grip screws; the extremely rare MkI had the grip secured by a single screw and a press stud without the screw slot. The bayonet has a 8 inch "bowie" style clip-point blade, with a wide fuller running down each side, with an overall length of 12 inches. Unlike most bayonets, the wooden grip scales wrap completely around the tang. Comes complete with a steel-throated scabbard, painted black. Scabbards produced from the 50s onward had large brass throats while the war time was steel. This example is steel, but is immediately post-war, as the bayonet is dated 1946. The web frog on the scabbard is dated 1943, and has the "Broad Arrow in C" marking for Canadian issue.

In very good condition, this bayonet still has the original bright finish on the blade, with the hilt blued. Many were refurbished post war, but this one was not, and the blade and hilt are still in great shape, with clear markings. The grips are a bit dark from oil and grease, but still are in very good condition. Ready to display with your No.5 Carbine!
