The Story

Original Item: Only One Available. In lovely matured condition, this is a very nice brass Verner's Pattern VIII Prismatic field compass. These have a glass prism and a glass window on the lid with a line across it, which is used to determine the bearing of an object in the distance. It has a dry-card compass with both a momentary bearing lock and transit lock, which rotates in the base. When the compass card stops, the required bearing is read off through the prisms.

The back of the case is marked inside the rubber pad:

F-L
BROAD ARROW
NO. 82230
1917

On the interior of the compass is a very small etched name, LT. EKING, a great research opportunity. This British Issue Verner's Pattern field Compass would have been used in the Trenches by Officers in the first World War. Very well made and fully functional, this comes in its original brown leather carry case marked FRENCH & SON LTD. / LONDON / 1917 which retains the securing strap but there is no carry strap. The case is splitting at the seams a bit but not too seriously. A WW1 accessory that in such complete condition and dated is very hard to locate today.

In wonderful condition, ready to Display or use.
