The Story

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very good example of a late "Third Pattern" British Fairbairn-Sykes commando dagger, with an alloy handle and original scabbard. As brass was a "strategic material," only the early examples of the third pattern have brass handles, with later war produced models having blacked alloy handles. The handle dates production to late 1944 - early 1945. The knives varied somewhat in size, and this example measures 11 7/8", with a 7” blade. This example comes with the standard belt scabbard with the tongue and elastic securing strap intact.

The condition of the knife is fair, still with relatively sharp edges, and much of the original black finish on the blade. There is a little oxidation near the ricasso. The plain blued steel cross guard is tight on the blade with no wobble and some minor surface oxidation and little to none of the original finish, but it is a bit dented. It is marked on the underside of the crossguard with the standard ENGLAND stamping which was done for exportation purposes.

The scabbard is in good condition, with the expected wear from being used in service. The leather is well broken in and soft, with some creasing and a few small tears. The brass chape is still present. The tongue is still intact but it is very weak and floppy. The elastic band is intact but no longer elastic as they all become. The scabbard is also marked ENGLAND on the tongue. The leather is a bit weak.

An increasingly hard-to-find knife that would fit into any British WWII collection.

Blade Style: Spear Point Knife
