Original Item. Only One Available. The Infantry Tank Mark II, better known as the Matilda, is a British infantry tank of the Second World War. The design began as the A12 specification in 1936, as a gun-armed counterpart to the first British infantry tank, the machine gun armed, two-man A11 Infantry Tank Mark I. The Mark I was also known as Matilda, and the larger A12 was initially known as the Matilda II or Matilda senior. The Mark I was abandoned in 1940, and from then on the A12 was almost always known simply as "the Matilda".
This is a very rare Telescope Sighting No. 124 LP MK.1 used on the Matilda in its original transit case. This sight was designed for the British Matilda Tank with a 40mm/ 2 Pound gun. This sight would be used by the gunner as the primary aiming method for both the main gun as well as the coaxial machine gun. The sight is primarily constructed of brass and a feature’s a rather simple reticle with a single elevation adjustment turret. The reticle layout features a simple cross design with elevation and windage hash marks to help the gunner aim at distance or for targets on the move.
The sight retains markings:
TELESCOPE
SIGHTING NO. 124 LP
MK. I
BRITISH OPTICAL Co.
Sydney, Australia
No. 1323 1942
D (Broad Arrow) D 237
The optic appears to work but is a small bit blurry and is spotty. This thing is a beast of an optic weighing in at 7 pounds 8 ounces and with a length of 15.5 inches.
The original transit case is retained but the lid is broken off, though it looks fine for display. It is stamped N&Y / 1941 denoting manufacture in 1941.
A very rare set, ready for further research and display.
