Original Item: Only One Available. Victorian Britain was the age of Empire. The industrial revolution provided the technology and equipment while the military provided the victories. Britain expanded to dominate the world and pomp and glory became the order of the day.
Here is a magnificent brass light cavalry helmet with an impressive black and white horse hair plume of the Royal Irish Dragoon Guards, the most senior of the Irish Cavalry Regiments. First raised as the Earl of Arran's Regiment of Cuirassiers in 1685 it became the 4th Royal Irish Dragoons Guards in 1788. Still in existence today as the 4th/7th Dragoon Guards after amalgamation with the 7th Dragoon Guards in 1922.
This helmet is the much more difficult-to-find Pattern of 1847 and was in use until the introduction of the P-1871. Complete with the original leather lining and the leather-backed brass ringed chin scales. An outstanding example for its age.
This is the first P-1847 we have offered, and we likely won’t see another for a very long time. This regiment took part in the charge of the Heavy Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava in October 1854 during the Crimean War.
The brass peak and bowl showing some slight dents or distortions certainly commensurate with the age making this a very rare Helmet to find and ready to display.
