The Story

Original Item. Only One Available. This is a beautiful European child’s court small sword for a young member of nobility, with a beautifully ornamented brass hilt and a partial scabbard.

The small sword or smallsword (also court sword, Gaelic: claidheamh beag or claybeg, French: épée de cour, lit. “Sword of the court”) is a light one-handed sword designed for thrusting which evolved out of the longer and heavier rapier (espada ropera) of the late Renaissance. The height of the small sword's popularity was during the 18th century, when any civilian or soldier with pretensions to gentlemanly status would have worn a small sword daily.

The 23¼” blade is in good order but the tip is dull, however this may have been the original design as these were ceremonial more than anything. The sword retains the red felt blade buffer. The overall length is 28⅜”.

The scabbard is missing the drag and some of its length, only measuring 20” now. The frog button is a lovely design, but the leather has some crazing although it has kept its shape well.

A scarce child’s court small sword, ready for further research and display.

 Specifications:
Overall length: 28 3/8”
Blade length: 23 1/4”
Scabbard Length: 20”
Blade Style: Straight Court Blade
