The Story

Original Item: Only One available. This is an exceptional example of a French 2nd Empire Officer’s Shako complete with the plume and liner! The shako was originally worn by an officer of the Artillery, and there is a museum tag inside dating the shako to 1850. There is a name on the interior, a great research project.

The shako is in excellent condition for its age. The shako is constructed of a Beaver Pelt covered pasteboard body, with leather visor and crown. Around the crown is a red band for artillery. The front still bears the crossed cannons and flaming bomb for Artillery, with a red white and blue cockade under an Artillery button within red cording. The back of the kepi has a small brass ring, likely for attachment of a chain or chinstrap.

The original red horsehair plume is in great condition and retains much of the hair. The body of the shako itself has some material loss on the crown, but otherwise it’s in fantastic condition. The original lining on the interior is in great shape with all six tongues still retained with some having heavy wear. There is a handwritten name on the interior showing tons of potential.

One of the nicest examples of early French headgear we have had the pleasure of offering! Ready for display!
