The Story

Original Item: Only One Available. Here we have a very interesting hand embroidered fringed ceremonial flag, made during the Pre WWII years after the NSDAP takeover. It looks to be some type of Freemason / Masonic flag, and definitely has some very interesting symbolism on both sides of the flag. It measures 9 1/2" x 9 1/2", with a gold bullion fringe on two of the sides, and looks to have had gold bullion hanger loops on the top and left side, which are now torn.

The front shows a woman with wheat over her shoulder shaking hands with a man holding a wheel, which is an ancient masonic symbol, and they are on either side of a rayed sun, with the word EINIGKEIT (Unity) between them. Beneath the sun however is the phrase Tod wo ist dein Stachel (Death, where is thy sting?), with a skull underneath on what looks like thorns. Then under all of this is Übim̄er Treu u. Redlichkeit (Above all loyalty and honesty). Definitely a very interesting juxtaposition of almost opposing ideas and themes! This is all hand-embroidered with gold bullion accents. The reverse shows an early style NSDAP Reichsadler eagle, rendered with multiple colors of thread.

We are not entirely sure the purpose of this ceremonial flag, but the level of artistry and construction is VERY high, and this is sure to be a colorful part of any WWII collection. Ready to research and display!
