The Story
Original Item. Only One Available. This is a lovely NSKK - DDAC commemorative plaque, mounted on a black marble base measuring 6 1/4" x 6 1/4" x 3/8". The plaque commemorates a 2000km race through Germany in 1934. It is made from what looks to be brass, measuring 5 1/4" in diameter, and shows an eagle's head in the center with an oak leaf sprig in its beak. Around this are several famous locations in Germany, including several churches, in addition to some markings and there is a raised border at the edge with oak leaves and other designs interspersed with additional markings. All together the markings read as follows:
O N S
1934
(Swas)
2000km
DURCH
DEUTSCHLAND
NSKK-DDAC
During the Pre WWII period, many of the various civic and paramilitary organizations under the NSDAP umbrella worked together to stage various events to help instill a sense of national unity. The ONS, or Obersten Nationalen Sportbehörde (Supreme National Sports Authority) is the organization that organized the race 2000km Durch Deutschland (2000k Through Germany) in 1934. It involved both the NSKK National Socialist Motor Corps, and the DDAC German Automobile club, and possibly others. We can see the NSKK logo in the lower right corner of the marble base, along with a DAF National Labor Front cog wheel in the upper right, so they may also have been involved.
A wonderful piece of Pre WWII German memorabilia, ready to display!
The development of the NSKK, National Sozialistisches Kraftfahr Korps, (National Socialist Motor Corps), can be traced back to 1923, when the SA introduced a Kraftfahr Abteilung, (Motor Section), to transport personnel as required. In 1928 the SA Motor section was expanded to Kraftfahrstaffeln, (Motor Squadrons). In an attempt to create a national motor corps the NSAK, National Sozialistisches Automobil Korps, (National Socialist Automobile Corps), was formed in April 1930 as an NSDAP auxiliary organization, which was subordinate to the SA.
In early 1931 Adolf Hühnlein was appointed as Chief of the NSAK and proposed a name change to NSKK, which was officially accepted in April 1931. Before the introduction of a standardized belt buckle the NSKK used the SA pattern rectangular buckle in a variety of styles usually nickel or chrome-plated over brass or steel.
The NSKK served as a training organization, mainly instructing members in the operation and maintenance of high-performance motorcycles and automobiles. The NSKK was further used to transport NSDAP and SA officials/members. The NSKK also served as a roadside assistance group in the mid-1930s, comparable to the modern-day American Automobile Association or the British Automobile Association. With the outbreak of World War II NSKK ranks were recruited to serve in the transport corps of various German military branches. There was also a French section of the NSKK which was organized after the German occupation of France began in 1940. The NSKK was the smallest of the NSDAP Party organizations.
Der Deutsche Automobil Club (DDAC - The German Automobile Club) was the only authorized automobile club in Germany during the Third Reich. The club absorbed the ADAC and other automobile clubs in 1934, shortly following the rise of AH to the position of Führer und Reichskanzler (leader and chancellor of the Reich). The DDAC provided roadside assistance to members and was closely affiliated with the NSKK. These "Clubs" were used by the NSDAPs to encourage Automobile skills as they did for Flying skills during the time when Germany was still not allowed and Military organizations.
