The Story
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very rough example of a German Empire period M1895 Garde-Infantry Mannschaften (EM-NCO) issued Pickelhaube. The chinstrap and cockades are all absent, and both the front and rear visors are loose. As with previous versions, the body was constructed from boiled leather, which was shaped and lacquered black.
This example came right before the "transitional" patterns, having been made in 1914, the year before the new regulations came into effect. The front visor trim, rear spine, and the top spike and fitting are brass.
The front garde korps wappen features a crowned Prussian state eagle clutching a scepter and sword in its claws, over the King's motto, MIT GOTT FÜR KOENIG UND VATERLAND (With God for King and Country, i.e. Prussia). As this is a Garde helmet, there is a large 8 pointed "German Silver" star in the middle, which is the emblem of the Hoher Orden vom Schwarzen Adler (Order of the Black Eagle). The motto SUUM CUIQUE (to each his own) is marked above an eagle, with laurel leaves below. The Wappen is held in place by the leather wedges but they may not be the originals.
The helmet is missing both cockades as well as the chinstrap.
Both the front and rear visors are loose to the helmet which makes it sag a bit. The front visor has a clearly inscribed name, Ich Staüder. The rear visor has a myriad of markings including a unit marking, A.R.27, and II.A. over 1914 next to 4.B.. It is also stamped for Size 56. The leather liner is in fair condition and retains all of its tongues, but it is cracking and crazing.
Overall a very worn but rare Garde Pickelhaube with researchable unit markings. Comes ready for further research and display.
