The Story

Original Item. Only One Available. The Reichsmarine (State Navy) was the name of the German Navy during the Weimar Republic and first two years of AH’s Germany. It was the naval branch of the Reichswehr, existing from 1919 to 1935. In 1935, it became known as the Kriegsmarine (War Navy), a branch of the Wehrmacht; a change implemented by AH. Many of the administrative and organizational tenets of the Reichsmarine were then carried over into the organization of the Kriegsmarine.

This is a rare Solingen-Produced totally original German Weimar Period Model 1929 Naval Dagger by Weyersberg Kirschbaum & Cie, complete with the original brass scabbard. This is a very nice service used example and is only the second example of this rare dagger that we have had.

This model was very similar to the prior Model 1919/1921 dagger which featured a black celluloid covered wooden grip, wrapped in twisted brass wires. The Model 1929 features an ivory colored grip, but is otherwise very similar to the Model 1919/1921 This model would remain the standard German Naval dagger until 1938, well into the NSDAP period.

The crossguard is the standard brass type with a fouled anchor panel on the front, with a release button on the rear (button top is missing). The grip is in very good condition, with the ivory well retained. The twisted brass wire wrapping is in excellent tight condition. The scabbard locking button is fully functional, though it can require some effort to get it to unlock at times.

The blade is a very good example, but there is no etching. There is light overall wear, and some light staining. The tip of the blade is straight and unbent, and the original leather blade buffer is still intact, rare to see.

The ricasso of the blade is stamped with the “Knight’s Helmet” (Ritter-helm) logo of legendary German maker Weyersberg Kirschbaum & Cie of Solingen. This company is a famous manufacturer of military swords and cutlery in Solingen, Germany - a city famous since the middle ages for its metal-working and craftsmanship in sword making. Per J. Anthony Carter's fine work GERMAN SWORD AND KNIFE MAKERS, the traditional manufacturing of swords at WKC dates back to the year 1774 when the Weyersberg first registered the ''Kings head'' as their trademark. Later in 1883 the company merged with the Kirschbaums and the company Weyersberg Kirschbaum & Cie was formed, which continued into the Weimar Period. It then rebranded as W.K.C. Waffenfabrik GmbH, and produced many edged weapons during the NSDAP Period. The company is still in operation today.

The acorn & oak leaf-adorned brass scabbard is in good order. The suspension rings also have oak leaves engraved on, and the scabbard appears free of any serious denting. The throat is retained by two dome headed mount screws on the narrow sides, which do not appear to have been removed. Overall the scabbard has a lovely well-worn mustard patina to it.

Overall a great early example of a hard to find Weimar Period Naval dagger, made by a well-known Solingen maker, complete with scabbard. A worthy addition to any knife collection. Ready to display!
