The Story

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a lovely example a belt hanger for a German WWII Heer Army officer dagger. The design has two straps with spring clips at the end that attach to the hanger rings on the dagger scabbard, with the other ends attached to a square buckle, which attaches to a spring clip on the inside of the uniform. There were several different configurations of these made, but in general the Army version features a silver bullion front on the straps, with green / gray velvet plush material on the back. They are adjustable in length somewhat, and this example measures approximately 10 3/8" in overall length.

This hanger features zinc alloy fittings with a silver wash, which is retained to a varying degree. As is correct, the buckles and keepers are engraved with the same oak and acorn motifs seen on the dagger and scabbard. The clips are the more desirable "sliding" type, both marked D.R.G.M. on the back, indicating it is a trademarked design. The original plating on the fittings is still partly retained, with some remaining bright, while other areas have tarnished. The straps are in very good condition, showing the bullion on the front well, and the velvet plush material on the reverse is well retained, showing light wear. The leather portion of the straps that wraps around the top fitting is however degraded, and we can see some stitch repairs for past tearing.

The perfect accessory for any German WWII Heer Army Dagger!

The German Army (Heer) first carried a dagger beginning in 1935. The weapon was worn in lieu of occasions not demanding the wearing of a more formal sword. The dagger design was quite attractive featuring silvered heavy fittings with white or colored grip. The crossguard depicted a Wehrmacht open-winged eagle clutching a wreathed swas.

The pommel depicted oak leafing around the outer circumference. The scabbard had panels of pebble designs. Later produced examples were plated with nickel, and late war-made pieces were unplated, finished in a gray color metal. This early war version is quite nice, and in great shape.
