The Story

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a lovely early example of a German WWII Heer Army EM-NCO M38 overseas cap (Schiffchen), showing light period wear with a moth holes. The overseas cap, nicknamed in German military slang as Schiffchen, or literally "little ship" as it resembled an up-turned row-boat, was standard issue for all branches of the Heer.

This example is constructed of a field gray (feldgrau) wool exterior, with a very interesting two part liner. It is gray herringbone twill (HBT) on the sides, while the top is black herringbone twill, a type of weave we usually do not see on the liners for these caps. Sewn in place in the front of the cap is a 1940 Pattern Heer BeVo embroidered Wehrmachtadler Eagle, with light gray threading on a green background. Below this on the outer flap is a BeVo embroidered tri-color cockade on a diamond background. Later in the war a single piece insignia trapezoid would be used. There is no corps color soutache, so it most likely is for infantry.

The cap presents beautifully, and does not look to have seen much use during the war. There is little to no sweat staining on the interior, and the exterior still retains the original colors well. It has been stitched together along the center seam in the middle, which helps it sit better on the head. There is no size marked, but it seems to be about a 58 or 59.

A very nice M38 overseas cap, ready to add to your collection!
