The Story

Original Item: Only One Available. Here we have a very interesting piece of German WWII era memorabilia: a stoneware / earthenware lidded cigarette box, which has an eagle insignia on the handle for the lid. It is not an insignia that we can identify, showing an eagle with lightning bolts behind its talons, perched on what looks to be a letter or rune of some type. It was made by Böttger Stoneware, which looks to be a part of Staats Porzellan Manufaktur Meissen (State Porcelain Factory Meissen, abbreviated as St.P.M. Meissen. We have seen these boxes called Deckeldose Adler (Lidded box with Eagle Motif), though unfortunately we have not been able to identify which organization it originates from. It measures approximately 5 1/2"W x 3 1/2"D x 3"H.

It is well marked on the bottom with the maker and other information:-

BÖTTGER
STEINZUG
ST. P. M. MEISSEN
(Crossed Swords)
"Bemberg-"
Werbe=Abteilung
Berlin W / 35

Below this on the lower left corner is Q221 and the lower right corner L241, which are most likely mold or design numbers. We were not able to find much about the use of these cigarette boxes, but were able to find two nearly identical examples through online research.

Condition is very good, showing just a bit of scuffing and old sticker adhesive on the top. We did note however that the "handles" on both sides have suffered damage, with part being chipped on on both sides. One side was smoothed over after breaking off, while the other looks to have been after that, and is still somewhat rough.

A very interesting piece from WWII Era Germany!
