The Story

Original Item: Only One Available. Gorgets hold an interesting place in history, as they are a throw-back to the days of knights, when suits of armor included a neck protection device called a Gorget. They have been used since that time to identify membership or function in various military and police organizations, and Gorgets were thoroughly used during the Third Reich.

This is an EXTREMELY rare gorget to find, in any condition. The German Heer (Army) standard bearer's gorget, introduced in 1936, is absolutely one of the most desirable and handsome of all gorgets issued by the third reich. The half moon-shaped back plate is made of a heavy non-magnetic alloy, which has been given a silver wash. The insignia is two crossed army standards, which both have wreathed Heer Wehrmachtadler eagles on them. This is surmounted by a larger art deco Heer eagle over a sprig of oak leaves and acorns, an iconic German symbol. There are also large oak leaf sprigs at either corner, attached to two rosette buttons in the corners.

As originally issued, the backing plate would be bright silver, while the insignia and rosettes would be blacked silver, giving a great contrast. The original finish has now worn overall, with the backing plate having lost a good amount of the silvering, now displaying an oxidized patina in areas. The insignia still retains the blacked finish well, showing war through on the raised areas.

The reverse has the correct three prongs and and a field gray wool fabric backing, which is still glued firmly in place. The hooks on the sides are made from steel, and both have their original clip ramps inside, with no signs of damage or repairs. The central prong is non-magnetic, intended to attach to the front of the uniform and prevent the gorget from moving around. It is marked with the "barred A" trademark logo of F. W. Assmann & Söhne of Lüdenscheid, a large maker of belts, buttons, and other accoutrements. They are a known and desirable maker of these rare gorgets.

The chain consists of 20 oval and 1 circular medallions connected together by round rings, with rings on the last links to attach to the gorget, and measures 18 inches in overall length. The circular central medallion features oakleaves, which are purposely facing perpedicluar to the other medallions to assist the wearer it making sure the chain is connected right side up.
