The Story
Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a lovely portrait of a German Infantry Gefreiter, which looks to be print of a painting, or possibly a painting on paper that was shot with lacquer overall to protect it, as we cannot see much in the way of brush strokes. In the frame, it measures 15 3/4" x 19 1/2", while the portrait itself measures 10 1/2 x 14 3/8”. We do not have any identification regarding the person in the portrait, and there is no name or date noted.
The subject is wearing a standard M-36 Field Tunic, and style of shoulder board & litzen indicates that they are an Infantry Gefreiter, equivalent to a U.S. Army "Acting Corporal". He has a standard Heer breast eagle, and there is an Eastern Medal ribbon attached to the second buttonhole from the top. The piping around the shoulder boards is Weiß (white), the Waffenfarbe (Corps Color) during WWII for Infanterie (Infantry) and Motorisiert Infanterie (Motorized Infantry). There is a number 13 cypher on the shoulder boards, most likely for the 13th Infantry Regiment. The portrait is in good shape overall, but there is some loss of the paint at the edges, so we assume it was not always protected in the frame.
Definitely an interesting piece of WW2 Memorabilia! Ready to research and display!
