Original Item: One-of-a-kind. A wonderful personal photo album, marked on the front with the standard Erinnerungen an meine Wehrdienſtzeit (Memories of my Military Service) in gold letters, with a Heer Army stahlhelm helmet in the lower left. The inner rear cover still has a maker label from Berlin, and the album overall measures approximately 112 1/4" x 8 5/8". The album cover is fabric covered, with a tri-color cord binding it together.
A total of 72 photographs fill the pages of this album, making it a treasure-trove of images taken from the viewpoint of a young, patriotic German soldier. These are contained on 22 pages, which are not captioned, and most are separated by "spiderweb" pattern "onion skin" separators. All of the photos appear to be attached by adhesive on the reverse. The pictures show a Panzer Armored unit in training and also at ease, and there are numerous pictures of German Panzer I (Panzerkampfwagen I or Pz.Kpfw. I) tanks, both parked, and in the field. There are also pictures of panzer soldiers in their distinctive black "Panzer Wrap" tunics, wearing rare M1934 Schutzmütze Panzer "Beret" Protective Hats. There is even a picture later of a ship, as well as the Laboe Naval Memorial in Laboe, near Kiel, Germany. The inside of the front page has a handwritten note about the Panzer Regiment 6, part of Panzer Division 3, but we can find nothing in the album that actually connects it to this unit.
Overall a really nice hard to find photo Panzer Armored Unit album from World War Two Germany with some incredible Panzer I tank pictures. Some really fantastic research and display potential!
Context is everything when preserving old photo albums. The order in which an album was put together meant something to the creator and may give you clues about the photographs if they’re not identified. If at all possible, keep old albums in their original order. It’s okay to remove loose photos, but make a note of where they came from.
