The Story
Original Item. Only One Available. This is an interesting WWII Enlisted “Pioneer” dress bayonet. A very unique Extra-Seitengewehr of the S 84/98 pattern for walking out. These bayonets looked too much like issue 84/98 bayonets and were not very popular by the soldiers and are therefore quite scarce. They were marketed as "Engineer" (Pionier) bayonets by the manufacturers, but were used by any branch of the military, including Police.
This example sports an unmarked 7¾” blade which is a knife blade rather than the standard bayonet blade. It retains its leather blade buffer and the black bakelite grips which are in good condition. The button still works fine.
The steel scabbard is straight throughout, showing no dents or other damage, however the original black enamel finish is definitely degraded. It has suffered some age checking and crazing, which has caused a good amount of the enamel to flake away, especially on the front side. The areas where it is gone have now oxidized somewhat as well, giving it a lovely aged look. The scabbard is held in a very nice brown leather dress belt frog without rivets, which is in excellent condition.
A very lovely & scarce pioneer bayonet, ready for further research and display.
Specifications:
Blade Length: 7 3/4"
Overall length: 12 3/4“
Scabbard Length: 8 7/8"
