Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a very beautifully framed Real Photo Post Card (RPPC) of the Berghof, the holiday home of AH in the Obersalzberg of the Bavarian Alps near Berchtesgaden, Bavaria, Germany. Other than the Wolfsschanze ("Wolf's Lair"), his headquarters in East Prussia for the invasion of the Soviet Union, he spent more time here than anywhere else during his time as the Führer.
The actual photograph is a postcard (RPPC) that was developed at the photo studio of Emil Köhn, Kunstverlag, München, which is roughly two hours from the Berghof. From the markings on the back, this does look to be an actual photographed developed by this photographer, as opposed to a part of a series published in high numbers. Additionally, we could not find this exact photograph of the Berghof anywhere else, with the German flag flying at the top of the hill. The actual postcard measures 3 ¼ x 5 ¼” and sits in the larger frame.
The frame is a beautiful period-constructed example that almost looks like two frames put together, and it is certainly of the period. There is a chain for hanging the piece on the wall. The photo doesn’t sit very still in the frame due to its construction, but it should look fine for display!
An outstanding real photo post card of one of the most important buildings in German history, ready for further research and display!
Long an "alpine retreat" area for the Bavarian nobility, in the 1920s NSDAP Party Leader A H began vacationing in the area. He purchased a home in Obersalzberg in the 1930s, and would then begin work on the famous Berghof mountain retreat. As other top Third Reich figures, such as Hermann Göring, Joseph Goebbels, Martin Bormann, Heinrich Himmler, and Albert Speer, began to frequent the area the Party began to purchase and requisition land in the Obersalzberg.
The entire area was upgraded and improved to better serve as an outpost of the Reichskanzlei (Imperial Chancellery), with required improvements to infrastructure and roads. A barracks for the SS was built, to serve as a guard for the high command of the NSDAP. Rumors were also spread as part of a propaganda plan regarding an "Alpine Redoubt" for the leadership to retreat to before fleeing the country. While these were never acted on, the Allies were concerned enough that bombing runs were launched against the mountain retreat in April 1945, which heavily damaged the Berghof and other buildings in the area. It would later be captured by U.S. forces, with little to no resistance.
