The Story
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very interesting vintage World War II German Police NCO's Degen (Épée) Dress Sword, which was cut down and converted to a fighting knife, most likely by a USGI or other member of the Allied Forces. This would have made a lovely souvenir, as well as a rather handy fighting knife if needed. We have only had a few of the Police NCO swords before, and this would be a great addition to any WWII collection.
In spite of being heavily modified, the steel hilt fittings still retain much of the original nickel plating, with spots of oxidation where it has flaked and worn away. The pommel cap is the correct smooth type for an NCO sword (Officer's were serrated), and ferrule is decorated with six standing oak leaves separated by acorns. The ebony grip is still in very good condition, showing light overall wear, and no cracking, chipping, or other damage. There is no wrapping, another appointment only seen on the officer's version. The inset Police Civic eagle insignia is in good condition, and looks to be aluminum, with antiquing in the recesses of the design. It is a bit worn and bent inwards.
The blade has been shortened down to 5 7/8", now looking like a "cut down" bayonet. It is VERY sharp at present, and does look to have been sharpened at some point post war. The scabbard has been shortened to 7 3/4, and the bottom crimped closed. It still retains some of the original black enamel lacquer finish, and the upper "Wotan's Knot" throat fitting is still present. The hanger ring near the top of the scabbard was removed at some point.
A very interesting field modified German WWII Police NCO sword, ready to display!
