The Story
Original Item: Only One available. The Haus der Kunst (House of Art) is a museum for modern and contemporary art in Munich, Bavaria. It is located at PrinzregentenstraĂźe 1 at the southern edge of the Englischer Garten, Munich's largest park. It was built between 1933 and 1937 at the behest of Adolf H and to a monumental neo-classical design by Paul Troost as Haus der deutschen Kunst, or HDDK. It was intended to showcase NSDAP art as envisioned by the party, however it did not generate the success that was hoped, and many party elite had to purchase items to give it the appearance of being successful. Following the fall of NSDAP Germany, it was used as the U.S. Army's officers mess. It was eventually returned to being a building for the arts, and is still open today.
During the NSDAP period the Haus der Kunst was used for numerous events, which would of course involve food for the people attending, so custom silverware was ordered, with the insignia of the HDDK on the handles: a Civic Reichsadler eagle with a torch on the right, and what looks to be Lady Germania in a Roman helmet on the left. It matches exactly a pattern pictured in one of the German militaria books by collector Dr. Mark Griffith. The teaspoon measures about 5 5/8" long, and looks to have seen a good amount of wear. The plating is mostly intact, showing some areas where the nickel silver base metal is visible. It is marked on the back of the handle with the logo of Bruckmann of Heilbronn, a known maker of German Silverware:Â BRUCKMANN 90.
On silver plated German flatware, the number next to the maker name or trademark indicates the weight in grams used for silvering 12 forks and 12 spoons. 90 is the most frequent, and there are sometimes additional numbers, which are often not entirely understood.
A great piece of third reich memorabilia, ready to add to your collection!
