The Story

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice service worn example of a German WWII Heer Army EM-NCO M38 overseas cap (Schiffchen), showing a good amount of period wear. The overseas cap, nicknamed in German military slang as Schiffchen, or literally "little ship" as it resembled an up-turned row-boat, was standard issue for all branches of the Heer.

This example is constructed of a field gray (feldgrau) wool exterior with a lightweight gray canvas liner, which is made from several pieces of fabric. It has a flap going around the entire circumference of the cap, which is scalloped in the front, correct for the design. Sewn in place on the top front of the cap is a machine embroidered EM/NCO cap eagle, which is the 1940 pattern featuring grey embroidery on a light green background, which shows a good amount of wear. The cockade on the front of the cap was removed at some point, looking to have been pulled out, and there also is stitching for a branch soutache, however it was also removed. There is damage around the front from the insignia being removed as well.

The cap is much more of a gray color than we are used to seeing, and we believe it is very early issue, possibly repurposes from Pre-War materials. There is a good amount of moth damage to the exterior, and it looks to have seen long service during the war.

A very nice "salty" Heer Army M38 overseas cap with removed insignia, ready to add to your collection!
