The Story
Original Item: Only One Available. Recently purchased at a militaria show, is this genuine USGI bring back German WWII NSDAP Podium banner. The National Socialist German Workers' Party (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, abbreviated NSDAP), commonly known in English as the NSDAP Party, was a political party in Germany between 1919 and 1945. It was known as the German Workers' Party (DAP) before the name was changed in 1920.
The party's last leader, Adolf AH, was appointed Chancellor of Germany by president Paul von Hindenburg in 1933. AH rapidly established a totalitarian regime known as the Third Reich.
The banner is single sided and of multi-piece construction, with a white canvas circle (one piece) with a printed black swas (hook cross) stitched onto the red cotton background. Around this is a stitched on white border on the sides and bottom, with no border on the top. There is a white rayon fringe sewn onto the bottom. It measures 49" x 41", not counting the fringe on the bottom. The top is not cut off, and is just the end of the piece of fabric, with no type of attachment hardware. We assume it was probably pinned or tacked to the podium.
The white circle around the central swas was signed by at least 23 USGIs after capture, all looking to have used the same type of pen, which unfortunately has caused some of the signatures to become very faint. There are numerous penmanship styles visible, and most are written in cursive script, which unfortunately makes them somewhat difficult to read. Most have locations with the signature, and they come from all over the country. We are not sure which unit these men were attached to, and leave this as an excellent transcription and research project for the future owner.
The banner is offered in very good condition, looking to have seen moderate use during the NSDAP period. There is light staining and age toning throughout, especially on the white portions, and there are some small holes ant fraying at the very top. The stitching is all secure, as far as we can tell.
A very nice example, ready to add to your collection!
