The Story

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a lovely matured example of 1930s-1940s Period dark gray rubberized fabric raincoat, as used by the officers in the German Wehrmacht, including the Kriegsmarine Navy, Heer Army, and Luftwaffe Air Force. With the dark gray color, it would not be preferred by members of the SS, who in general only used all black leather. It also is not typical of what would be used at sea, so we believe this is for ground use, most likely by the Heer Army.

The raincoat has a lightweight rubberized fabric exterior, and is unlined for the most part, simply having a double layer of rubberized fabric around the shoulder areas. The exterior features two waist pockets with flaps, which have a somewhat soft rubberized lining, and the left pocket has the usual large eyelet for an officer's dagger. There is a hanger on the inside above this for the dagger, however there are not any interior pockets that we can find.

The front of the raincoat features the classic double-breasted front closure, with 6 pebbled buttons on each side. These all look to be maker marked on the back, and are attached directly to the fabric. There is not any waist belt on the inside or outside, however the rear of the jacket has an adjustable belt.

The button attached style company grade officers schulterklappen (shoulder boards) of this tunic are constructed with two rows of fine silver flatware "Russia Braid" double piping, with two rank "pips", indicating the officer rank of Hauptmann (Captain). They each have Blau (Blue) felt around the Russia braid and on the underside, the Waffenfarbe (Corps Color) for Transportation troops (Fahrtruppen) until 1942 and Supply troops (Nachschubtruppen) from 1942 onwards.

The raincoat looks to have seen a good amount of use during the war, and the rubberized coating on the fabric is degraded and flaking away on most of the interior. There is fraying at the ends of the both sleeves, and along some of the bottom.

One of the few rubberized German WWII raincoats we have ever had! Ready to research and display!
