Original Imperial German Pre-WWI Bavarian Artillery Lion’s Head Officer’s Sword with Triple-Etched Gold-Inlaid Blade with Ludwig Cypher & Scabbard

Original item: Only One Available. This is a beautiful classic Lionhead German WWI Artillery Officer's sword. The all brass alloy hilt consists of a finely detailed lion head cat with floral backstrap and "P" guard. Nicely detailed throughout his whiskers, chin, muzzle, and especially the Lion's Mane. The handwork is beautifully rendered throughout this brass. The brass chape bears crossed cannons denoting this as an artillery sword.

This example is in fine condition showing nice blade condition, with only a few areas of light oxidation. The blade has not been sharpened, and there are a few small nicks, but it is still quite nice. The blade is triple-etched and gold-inlaid, with glorious military motifs and the cypher of King Ludwig of Bavaria, which is how we identified the sword as Bavarian. There is no maker mark we could find, but it’s possible there is one hiding behind the chape that we just aren’t able to see.

The hilt has a great sharkskin wire-wrapped grip but it looks like the rivet which holds the grip in place has been replaced, and the grip shows some separation between it and the spine.

The original scabbard is in good shape with a very worn patina, along with some denting. One of the throat screws is missing. Both brass suspension rings are retained
