Original Item: Only One Available. This is a beautiful classic Nickel-Plated Imperial German WWI Presentation sword, with no etching and a great scabbard. It conforms to the Model 1889 standard quite well, with a straight thrusting blade, and a basket hilt guard. The presentation version is of course quite less robust than the cavalry issue, and these were privately purchased, so there is no acceptance marking on the spine.
The guard is partly "fold-away", and that portion also bears the Prussian Eagle on it, with the shield of the House of Hohenzollern on the chest. The guard shows some oxidation. The grip is molded bakelite or gutta percha, and is missing some material under the fold-away guard. The leather blade buffer is still present, and in good shape.
The 30¾” blade of this example is in great condition, with just a few scratches and areas of oxidation only at the ricasso. The only marking is the Carl Eickhorn "Two Squirrel" trademark over C.E., for manufacture by the legendary firm of Carl Eickhorn, located in Solingen, the "City of Blades" in Western Germany. Per J. Anthony Carter's book GERMAN KNIFE AND SWORD MAKERS, this specific version of the mark was used on swords, "walking out" bayonets, and other similar items after 1906. This is exactly the mark that should be on a WWI Blade. This company was founded in 1865 by Carl Eickhorn, and is arguably the most famous of all Solingen makers. Not only could the family trace their history back 500 years, but they could also demonstrate involvement in the hardening and grinding industries for the same period. Truly the nobility of Solingen Edged weapon dynasties. Eickhorn edged weapons are the most desirable of all makers.
The steel scabbard has a single hanging ring, as the second fitting was for a hook on the hanger. It has a great period paintjob in the classic “Ersatz Green” used on bayonet scabbards during this period. There is some heavy denting as shown.
Overall condition is very good. Ready to display!
