Original Japanese Edo Period Silver-Inlaid Iron Shogun Samurai “Abumi” Stirrup

Original Item. Only One Available. This is a beautiful example of Japanese metalwork, sublime in its design and craftsmanship, perhaps once belonging to a Shogun warrior. This “Abumi” Stirrup is of the typical form for the Edo period, with gorgeous silver inlay work depicting crashing waves and beautiful vinery work with a squash on the bottom.

The small moving piece at the top of the stirrup is still held in place by small loops of string, original to the period. The interior wood lining is decorated in red lacquer, standard for this period. The lacquer shows heavy cracking along the edges. The Abumi measures roughly 10 x 11½ x 5”.

The spine of the Abumi has a line of 6 Kanji characters which are inscribed via the silver inlay, and some of this inlay has worn away, but you can still make out where it was. This kanji is certainly translatable with some work.
