The Story

Original Item. Only One Available. This is a very interesting WWII period Japanese “Meatball” flag pennant, measuring approximately 38 x 90”. Due to its size and production, we believe it could be a naval maritime signal flag, but of this we can’t be certain.
The pennant is of multi-piece construction, with the red circle its own sewn-in piece. The header is intact but there is some tearing along the edges near it. The header retains its halyard, although just a small piece of it. The header shows heavy wear and staining, but we aren’t sure if any of the small markings we see are actual markings or just stains.
The pennant is not pointed as most are, and is instead flat at the bottom. The flat end is roughly 16” wide, with the header 38” wide.
A lovely likely captured Japanese pennant, ready for further research and display.
The Japanese call their country's flag Hinomaru (日の丸), which translates literally to "circle of the sun", referencing the red circle on a white field. It embodies the country's sobriquet: Land of the Rising Sun.
