Original Japanese WWII Imperial Japanese Army Type 92 Field Telephone with Rare Rubberized Canvas Carrying Case & U.S. Intel Instruction Sheet - Dated 1945

Original Items: Only One Available. Japanese communications in general comprise a complex, modern (at the time) system, highly flexible and efficient. Older equipment was considered obsolete by American standards but was ruggedly built. At the time, the newest enemy equipment compared favorably with the current American models. There is some evidence that the system was handicapped by a shortage of trained personnel, but an evident determination existed to make the best use of the existing facilities.

This is an outstanding example of a Japanese Type 92 Field Telephone with its original scarce rubberized canvas case. This is the first time we’ve encountered one of these cases. Also included is a printout of the U.S. Intelligence instructions on how to operate the radio if a soldier were to find or capture one.

From the data plate visible on the inside of this unit, the radio is a 九二式電話機 (Type 92 telephone). The Type 92 has the following information located on the small data plate on the front:

NO 46926
昭和 二十 年 三 月製造

The bottom line reads as Showa 20, 3 and denotes manufacture in March of 1945. The set retains its wiring and the original handset.

The unit has not been function tested and we cannot guarantee it is fully operational and able to use as communications equipment.

The original rubberized case measures 7¼ x 11 x 5½” including the warping of the material. The hinged lid no longer opens all the way, and attempting to do so will break the rubberized canvas. This is the first time we’ve seen the cover for the field telephone, as is it a very scarce piece to find.

The printed instructions offer a great opportunity to possibly get this back to working order, but we cannot guarantee that it will work without a lot of hard work and restoration.
