The Story

Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a tremendous Japanese “meatball” flag which was captured and signed by 40 U.S. Marines, none of whom gave us a distinctive unit to link them all under. Many of the men were in fact serving stateside for most of the war, traveling overseas to Japan for Occupation. This flag was likely captured by one of the signees who were engaged against the Japanese, and signed by many of his fellow marines during Occupation.

The flag is heavily worn and stained, but retains its two corner reinforcements with its tie strings. The flag measures 26 x 34” and is signed with 38 names on the front and 2 on the back, most of them restricted to the top half of the flag, with some ink bleeding having occurred while it was folded. Some of the Marines include Connie Drewitz “Doe” of Asbury Park, New Jersey, Lester F. Mooman of Willard, Ohio, Walter W. Jungeberg of Oberlin, Ohio, and Bert Mulder of Grand Rapids, Michigan. We found several of the men in the Marine Corps muster rolls. Mulder, for example, doesn’t appear to have gone overseas until January of 1946. So this flag was almost certainly signed by most of the men during the Occupation period.

This is truly a wonderful piece of history, a Japanese flag captured and signed by 40 Marines! There were many names we weren’t able to discern, leaving much room for further research! Comes ready for further research and display.
