The Story

Original Item. Only One Available. This is a lovely early-to-mid 19th century Continental officer’s sword likely used by France or Germany during the 1830s & 1840s. The sword is all brass mounted with a standard "P" handguard with a standard wire-wrapped leather grip which is in good order.

The blade features gorgeous fire-bluing as well as gold-inlaid etchings, and the ricasso is etched on one side with:

H&R Böker

And on the other side with:

Remscheid

H&R Böker Cutlery was founded in Remscheid, Germany in 1829, but the family had been making handtools in Germany since 1674. During the American Civil War, they manufactured muskets and 18,000 sabers for the Union Army.

Based on the style of etching, this example dates to the 1830s. The 32” blade shows heavy period wear and the gold inlay is heavily worn away except at the ricasso. Also, much of the beautiful "fire blue" finish is present on the first half of the blade, something we rarely see! There is some wear, but the blue/purple color is still quite present, and even has some lovely designs at the transition to bright steel, done by masking the blade with lacquer, which was later removed.

There is some oxidation towards the end of the blade, but nothing extreme. The overall length is 36½”.

The all-brass scabbard is in good order with some denting and staining but nothing serious. Both suspension rings are retained.

A gorgeous continental officer’s sword by a scarce maker, ready for further research and display.

Specifications:
Blade length: 32”
Overall length: 36 1/2”
