Original Item. Only One Available. This is a tremendous example of a WWI era fez which we believe is of Ottoman origin. The fez is in fantastic shape as it comes housed in its original metal transit case which is named to one side M. NAGUI, the name Nagui being of Arabic origin. The fez has a maker’s label inside which is unfortunately obfuscated by the tassel retention.Â
The fez measures 5¼” tall and is roughly a Size 6 3/4. The moroccan leather sweatband is retained and still well-stitched, with the silver image of an eagle clutching a scroll embossed onto one side. The interior crown is of blue silk, with the maker’s label attached over a nearly identical one. The top label is red, but the bottom sticker is green, for reasons we aren’t sure of.Â
The original carry case is in good order besides missing its latch. The top lid still fits onto the bottom and looks good for display, but as it is not latched you cannot carry it by the top handle without risking the bottom falling out. With the lid on, the case measures 9¼” tall (without handle) and an 8½” base diameter. Â
As fezes have become very common party & fraternal headgear, there is very little reference regarding military fezes of this era. A great opportunity for further research!
This is a great example of an early 20th century fez in its original named carrying case. Comes ready for further research and display.
