The Story

Original Item. Only One Available. The Wz. 86/93 bayonets were Lebel M1886 bayonets delivered to Haller’s Army together with their respective Lebel rifles, forming the basis of the Army of the Second Polish Republic.

The Blue Army, also known as Haller’s Army after its commander Józef Haller, was a Polish military force created in France during the First World War. It emerged in 1917 thanks to the initiative of the Polish National Committee in Paris and with the support of the French government, with the aim of gathering Polish soldiers dispersed across Europe and America, including prisoners of Polish origin who had served in enemy armies. Its name comes from the sky-blue uniform, the same as that of the French army. It eventually counted around seventy thousand men, largely volunteers from emigration and prisoners recruited in camps in France, Italy, and the United States. It fought alongside French forces in 1918, participating in the last offensives on the Western Front against Germany. After the end of the war, the Blue Army was transferred in 1919 to the newly restored Second Polish Republic, where it became one of the pillars of its armed forces. It took an active part in the Polish-Ukrainian War and the Polish-Soviet War between 1919 and 1921.

This is a very scarce Polish WZ86/93 bayonet of French manufacture. These were for Polish-used Lebel rifles left over from Haller’s Army. This example is clearly stamped WZ86/93 on the side of the pommel, along with several small proof marks on the crossguard.

The 20 ½” cruciform blade is in good condition with some heavy oxidation staining across. There is no serial number we could find on this example. The overall length is 25 ⅛”, and the crossguard is now heavily oxidized.

The scabbard now shows extremely heavy oxidation pitting along its length and is held in an original Polish leather frog which has breakage in the leather strap. The leather of the frog now shows some dry rot and other damage.

A very scarce Polish-used bayonet with very heavy wear. Ready for further research and display.

Dimensions:
Blade length: 20 1/2”
Blade Style: Cruciform
Overall length: 25 1/8”
Scabbard Length: 21”
