Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a lovely signed print of “First Boots on the Ground” by William S. Phillips. This example is not numbered, but is signed by five heroes of “Ia Drang” and framed with an additional sixteen signatures of 1st Cavalry Division members.
“November 14, 1965, the Central Highlands of South Vietnam, 10:48 am…As the dry season’s dust waifs skyward, the soldiers of the 7th Cavalry, 1st Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), deploy from UH-1 Hueys of the 229th Assault Helicopter Battalion onto Landing Zone X-Ray in the Ia Drang Valley.
Lt. Col. Hal Moore leads his men as they secure the area and prepare for the arrival of his main force, 450 soldiers strong. Before the day’s end, the men of the 7th Cavalry would engage over 2,000 North Vietnamese Army Regulars in the battle that would epitomize the savagery of the Vietnam War and the bravery of the men who fought it.”
The print is signed by the following men:
Lt. Gen. Hal Moore
Lt. Col. Bruce Crandall (MOH),
Sgt. Major Basil Plumley
Bob Ouellette
Al Bosse
The print is framed measuring 32 ¼ x 34 ¼”, with an additional sixteen signatures below the print of men in the 1st Cavalry Division who were present at Ia Drang. Some include their units and all are in great shape. These will make for a fantastic research project.
An outstanding frame with two photos in the back showing two signees and one signer of the original print.
