Original Item. Only One Available. This is a lovely example of a Spanish Artillery NCO’s sword with a lovely 27½” blade, stamped ARTa FABa DE TOLEDO 1886, for manufacture at Fabrica de Toledo in Spain in 1886. These swords were manufactured from the 1860s through the 1890s, being supplied to both Philippine and Cuban troops, seeing much combat against American soldiers during the Spanish-American War. This is the first example we have offered in its original scabbard.
Toledo swords, for centuries, when the fight depended not only on the personal ability of the fighter, but also the perfection of his weapon. Toledo swords' exceptional steel were forged into the most feared arms in the world. Their extraordinary hardness made each of these Toledo swords an invincible force in the hands of an expert swordsman. All European armies knew the superior quality of Toledo and many great warriors relied only on sabers of Toledan provenance.
The blade is oxidized in many spots, but the markings are still clear. The all-brass hilt is in good condition with a lovely patina. The overall length is 32¾”. This model of sword was one of the most popular bring-back items of U.S. soldiers during the war.
The original brass-mounted leather scabbard is in fair and complete condition, with the throat and drag still retained. The drag sits on the scabbard well, but it is no longer fully connected. The leather has aged well but has some loss of finish, and some of the stitching on the back is gone. The scabbard correctly droops down when held horizontally, further authenticating the piece.
A very lovely example, ready for further research and display.
Specifications:
Blade Length: 27 1/2"
Crossguard: 4"
Overall length: 32 3/4“
Scabbard length: 28”
