The Story
Original item: Only One Available. Here we have a very nice original Eagle Headed U.S. Militia Officer's sword from the 1830s. The gilt of the hand guard is heavily worn. The hilt has a very nice "closed mouth" Eagle head pommel. The grip is lovely ribbed bone/ivory, evident of an officer’s sword. The eagle's head is very well executed, with a lovely antiqued brass patina. The blade has fantastic markings and retains the gold-inlay very well.
The ricasso of the 26 1/2” straight blade bears the Weyersberg king’s head which was used until 1883 when that company merged with Kirschbaum. The blade bears lovely patriotic etchings, with W.H.H. & S. at the bottom, for William H. Horstmann & Sons of Philadelphia, meaning they were the retailer. The blade is still straight without any serious deviation, but it is a bit loose to the hilt.
A very lovely 1830s sword with a Weyersberg-marked blade, perfect for Mexican-American War use. Comes ready for further research and display.
Specifications:
Blade Length: 26 1/2”
Blade Style: Single Edged Saber with Fuller
Overall length: 31 1/4”
