Original Item: Only One Available. This is a stunning example of an early American-Made Militia rifleman’s bag with a period correct powder horn and two shot pouches. The leather of the bag has held up tremendously well, although the carrying strap is very weak. There is also a detached strap which has a gorgeous hand-carved funnel for the powder horn. The shot pouches have lovely carved wooden spouts and still retain some shot.
The rifleman’s bag is of the correct period construction with the long pointed front flap which is weak at the bend. The leather strap is retained by two metal rings which are still attached to both the bag and the strap, despite some weakness. There is a great hand-stitched sheath on the strap for the sheathing of a patch knife which is absent. The leather is actually pliable in spots but as it’s incredibly old we wouldn’t recommend testing that too much. There is a detached strap which may be from another bag, which has an attached hand-carved funnel for the powder horn.
The included powder horn measures 6 ⅛” and has some period etchings including crescent moon surrounded by 4 stars, some vinery, and a G, so this was likely meant to have more work done. There is a small metal loop in the wooden butt.
The first bag measures 4¼” and retains a long twine rope wrapped around the throat, and the original wooden plug. This bag retains roughly half of its shot.
The second bag has more of an upside-down heart shape and still retains a quarter of its shot. It has a wooden plug and metal throat. It is 7 ¼” long.
This is a lovely set that requires some love and care. A great Revolutionary War era rifleman’s set, ready for further research and display.
