The Story
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a stunning example of an early American-Made Militia rifleman’s bag with a period correct powder horn and shot pouch. The leather of the bag has held up tremendously well, although the carrying strap has unfortunately broken in half. The shot pouch has a lovely carved bone spout with floral designs stitched into the sides.
The rifleman’s bag is of the correct period construction with the long pointed front flap which is only weak at the bend. The leather straps are in good shape minus the break and the buckles are well-retained. The leather is actually pliable in spots but as it’s incredibly old we wouldn’t recommend testing that too much.
The powder horn is a gorgeous well-used example with heavy wear and marks, with the retaining loop still installed on the wooden bottom. There was a plug in the spout but it appears to have broken off, so it would take some work to get it out. Great carving work, this is a true one-looker. The horn measures roughly 11½” long.
The shot pouch is a lovely example with two styles of flower stitched on the sides. The carved bone spout shows heavy wear and cracking, but the original plug is retained as is the strap it is connected to. This is a gorgeous and complete example.
This is a lovely set that requires some love and care. A great Revolutionary War era rifleman’s set, ready for further research and display.
