Original Item: Only One Available. This is a stunning example of an early American-Made Militia rifleman’s bag with a period correct powder horn and a pair of leather shot pouches. The leather of the bag has held up well, although the carrying strap has unfortunately broken in half and someone more recently tried to repair it. The horn retains its stopper and one of the shot pouches still retains some shot.
The rifleman’s bag is of the correct period construction with lovely tassel patterning at the edge, although most of the tassels have since come off. There is an extra flap on the interior which likely had a purpose at one time. The strap is only partial but the flap still works well and the leather is a bit pliable.
The powder horn is a lovely smaller example, about 7” in length, retaining its original wooden stopper with a small rope attaching the stopper to the bottom ring of the horn to keep it from being lost, however we’re unsure of when the rope was added.
The shot pouches are in lovely order without any serious damage. The smaller of the two has a lovely horn spout with a wooden stopper, measures 5¼” long and is full of shot, although it was likely added much much later. The longer shot pouch has a lovely wooden clothespin style stopper and measures 8¾” in length. There are a few small holes in the pouch but nothing serious. There are a few tiny balls of shot still inside.
This is a lovely set that requires some love and care. A great Revolutionary War era rifleman’s set, ready for further research and display.
