Original Item: One-of-a-kind. In the early stages of the civil war, militias fought before standard Armies were formed. This was manufactured for use by Non-Commissioned Officers of the state militias, and was often referred to as a “Sergeants Sword”. As a whole, the sword and scabbard is in quite good condition for being almost two-hundred years old, but the scabbard has some repairs.
The brass crossguard and pommel with the “Knight’s Head” and patriotic shield motif show no extensive damage and have been tarnished due to age. The blade is believed to be an 1834 pattern with a double-edge. The steel still retains some of its original shine, with good edge and point. The handle and components are loose and do have slight movement in them. The grip is a great ribbed bone example.
There are no solid identification marks on the sword.
The scabbard is in similar condition as the sword, showing signs of use throughout the years. There are two major breaks in the leather which appear to have been repaired with a rubber solvent. There is tearing and heavy wear across the scabbard. The locket and chape (top and bottom) are retained but show heavy wear.
Swords like this were used from the Mexican War through the Civil War. Comes ready for further research and display
Dimensions:
Overall Length: 33 3/4”
